Energy-intensive industries can exploit the benefits of on-site power generation to deliver energy cost savings and reduced carbon emissions. View our case studies to see some of the projects we have worked on.
ENERGY CENTRE
Logistics park
Energy Centre at a grid constrained UK logistics park, providing a continuous and robust power supply for occupiers with a greener energy mix including roof top solar PV.
DESTEAMING & HEAT EFFICIENCY
Multi-national food company
This multi-national food company produces well-known heritage brands and private label products for the grocery sector. BasePower developed a project to upgrade the heat system at its largest manufacturing site, helping the client to reduce energy use and 1000t/y scope 1 Co2 emissions.
The site is a heavy user of its legacy steam plant and has a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) scheme in operation, installed by a third party.
Through a brief submetering campaign, BasePower was able to identify several opportunities to desteam its processes and improve heat efficiency, all using ‘free’ heat from the CHP and other sources.
By installing a 2MW hot water distribution ring which initially takes its heat from the CHP, the BasePower intervention will improve the site’s CIP effectiveness and cycle time while reducing energy usage equivalent to 1,000t/y of Scope 1 CO2.
A second phase will extend the heat recovery to waste condensate and a refurbished economiser, supplying this (via the Phase 1 distribution ring) for the preheat and temperature maintenance of liquid ingredients. This will drive further financial and CO2 savings as well as additional cycle time improvement.
The payback for Phase 1 of the project will be as little as one to two years. The Capex is supplied by the site.
CHP SCHEME
Savoury Foods Manufacturer
This project included the design and build of a 1.3MW CHP energy centre and an upgrade to the client’s existing boiler infrastructure.
CHP SCHEME
Cook-Chill Food Manufacturer
This large project in the food sector features a 2.7MW energy centre which was developed, procured, built and is now operated by BasePower on a customer-funded basis.
CHP SCHEME
Cranswick plc
FTSE 250 company Cranswick plc, commissioned BasePower to develop, build and operate an on-site energy programme at its largest site in Preston.
ENERGY ADVISORY & CONSULTING
Dairy, UK Crown Dependency
This island nation benefits from low cost, low carbon power but no indigenous gas supply resource. The local dairy is a global exporter of a high-quality product in a very competitive market, and uses LPG to satisfy its heat requirements.
BasePower worked with the dairy and local power company to assess ways that the dairy could reduce its operating costs and carbon emissions while increasing its energy resilience.
By analysing hour-by-hour operating patterns BasePower was able to develop a 3-tiered energy performance strategy for the dairy. This will allow it to reduce its consumption of LPG and lower its carbon emissions without increasing running costs, doubling the time duration between LPG resupply visits.
CHP SCHEME
Groupe Lactalis
Groupe Lactalis is the global leader in cheese and the second largest dairy company worldwide. BasePower installed a CHP scheme at The Caledonian Cheese Company dairy in Stranraer, Scotland.
ENERGY ADVISORY & CONSULTING
Kelda Water Services
Kelda Water Services provided water and waste operations, anaerobic digestion and renewable energy services. BasePower assisted Kelda in managing and de-risking the mid-stage of the construction of its new biogas plant at Millerhill, Edinburgh.
ENERGY & PROCUREMENT ADVISORY
London Teaching Hospital
NHS Foundation Trust
This major London teaching hospital was in the process of building a brand new hospital outside London. This required an on-site energy centre, purchased through the Carbon and Energy Fund. Aware of the technical and commercial complexity of the scheme, the Trust asked BasePower to provide an Energy & Procurement Advisory service. This included a technical evaluation of bids, analysis of pricing and charging mechanisms, support to the Trust’s personnel during bidder presentations, and preparation of board papers to support the client in shortlisting and selection.
The built project reduces carbon emissions by 27% and will save several millions of pounds for the Trust during its lifespan.
CHP SCHEME
Plastic Omnium
Plastic Omnium is a leading Tier 1 supplier to the global automotive industry. BasePower has successfully installed a Combined Cooling, Heat and Power (CCHP) at its facility in Measham, Derbyshire.
DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT
Polymer Injection Moulder
This company is a global leader in the development and production of plastic packaging solutions. BasePower acted as the owner’s engineer in the development of a 3.4MWe CHP project on one of their injection moulding sites. We managed the electrical and grid gas connection process, as well as supporting the client through its successful environmental permit and planning application.
ENERGY STRATEGY & ADVISORY
Logistics Property Solutions Provider
BasePower has provided an energy advisory service for a number of new business park developments for this client. Facing a number of otherwise excellent sites with energy constraints including limited grid capacity, poor grid reliability and tenants seeking greener energy sources, BasePower created an energy strategy for each development site. This allows the client the maximum amount of flexibility and lowest upfront costs as it develops and lets the business park while the energy market and customer requirements evolve.
Our work
The BasePower team has developed more than 30 energy generating schemes for a range of clients in the public and private sectors. Our successful projects have included CHP development, biogas and advisory work.
